Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco, LLP Continues to Grow

Joseph Rochman Joins Firm

New York -- October 2024 -- Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco, LLP, a boutique criminal defense, appellate, personal injury and civil rights and commercial litigation firm with offices in New York City and on Long Island, is proud to announce that it is adding another attorney to the team, Joseph Hayes Rochman.

Mr. Rochman graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations, and from New York Law School magna cum laude in 2022.

Before joining Barket Epstein, Mr. Rochman was a law clerk at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals Staff Attorney’s Office, where he worked on more than 140 civil rights, criminal, and postconviction appeals. His civil rights appeals included challenges to unlawful searches and seizures, false arrest and malicious prosecution, police brutality, First Amendment freedom of speech and religion, due process violations, and employment discrimination. He analyzed issues on appeal in criminal cases, ranging from challenges to pretrial release and guilty pleas to sentencing issues such as excessive sentencing, guidelines’ calculations, conditions of supervised release, and criminal forfeiture. His habeas corpus and compassionate release appeals included challenges to serious convictions, such as murder, robbery, drug trafficking, child pornography, and white-collar crimes.

He also gained experience handling appeals in New York State courts while interning for the late Hon. Paul Feinman at the New York Court of Appeals. Judge Feinman later officiated Mr. Rochman’s wedding.

At New York Law School, Mr. Rochman served as a staff editor on the New York Law School Law Review. The law school recognized Mr. Rochman’s leadership and public service, awarding him the Kathleen Grimm Award for Inspiring Leadership and an award for his commitment to social justice from the Wilf Impact Center for Public Interest Law.

During law school, he helped develop class-action civil rights cases on behalf of people with disabilities in NYLS’s Civil Rights and Disability Justice Clinic. At the Bronx Defenders and the Housing Rights Clinic at NYLS, he successfully advocated for clients with criminal justice involvement in employment and housing matters.

Mr. Rochman’s commitment to justice extends beyond the courtroom. Mr. Rochman currently serves on the Publications Committee of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, as an advisory board member of the Free to be Youth Project at the Urban Justice Center, and on the Judicial Committee of the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York. He is also a contributing author to LGBT Law Notes.

Before law school, Mr. Rochman had a career in fundraising for nonprofits such as hospitals, notably including NYU Langone Health as part of the fundraising team that helped the medical school become tuition free.
