Bruce Barket, Alexander Klein and Aida Leisenring represented a client who spent three years in jail and close to an additional year in an immigration detention facility after being unfairly targeted by detectives in the NYPD Gang Unit in 2014.
In charging the NYPD detectives of perjury, then Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance said, "These defendants are charged with fabricating the details of an arrest—seemingly out of thin air—in gross violation of their training, NYPD protocol, and the law. “When members of law enforcement commit misconduct, they threaten the credibility of our work and the safety of the citizens whom we are sworn to protect.”
W.B.'s convictions have now been vacated and dismissed by the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of Queens, which has held that law enforcement’s behavior surrounding his prosecution represented a violation of his constitutional right to due process.
This settlement represents a small measure of justice for W.B. and his family.
